Level 3 skills

You will be asked to solve problems you haven't seen before (at least not exactly), apply your knowledge of above skills in a sophisticated way.

1. During a training exercise, a submarine travels 16 km/h on the surface, but it only goes 10 km/h underwater. If the submarine travelled a distance of 160 km in 12.5 h, how long was it underwater?

2. On a plan marked out in meters, the coordinates of three houses are A(-16, 32), B(22, -24),
C(56, 8). The houses are to be connected to a gas line marked GH, where G(-16, -30), H(38, 42). What is the shortest length of pipe needed to connect house A to the gas line GH?

3.A ball is thrown straight down from a 180m high cliff. The following relation is a model that gives the approximate height of the ball h, in metres, at t seconds after it is thrown. How long does it take the ball to reach a ledge 80m from the base of the cliff? h = -5t2 - 5t +180

4. A searchlight is mounted at the front of a search-and-rescue helicopter. The pilot is flying the helicopter 150 m above the ground and the beam is angled at 70 degrees from the horizontal. The beam spreads out at an angle of 5 degrees. How wide an area does the beam illuminate?

5. The radar screen of an airport control tower shows that two planes are at the same altitude. According to the range finder, one plane is 100 km away, in the direction 60 degrees west of north. The other is 160 km away, at a direction of 50 degrees east of south. How far apart are the plances (to the nearest km)?
